Why Would Your Baby Need to Be Checked By a Chiropractor?

That’s a great question!

The easy answer is…

Because they were born! The birth process, even if completely “normal” can still be a traumatic experience for baby.

Every mom wants the best for her newborn. Keeping baby safe and healthy is your number one concern! We understand.

When your baby is born, they are checked by:

    • Your doctor
    • Your midwife
    • A nurse
    • And your nosy mother-in-law

Everyone wants to make sure mom and baby are okay.

We are no different.

There are many things chiropractors are trained to check newborn babies for that a medical doctor, unfortunately, may have no idea about.

Signs that YOU can look for to determine if a Chiropractic may be necessary:

    • Head tilting or irregular head shape.
    • Difficulty breastfeeding.
    • Poor head control.
    • Indigestion & excessive spit up.
    • Difficulty sleeping.
    • Excessive upset & crying.
    • Arching of the back.
    • Constipation.
    • Frequent illness or infection.

There are many questions you may ask before you even consider what a chiropractor may be checking for with your baby.

    1. Is it safe?

    2. Is it effective? Effective for what?

    3. Will my baby’s bones crack?

    4. Are their bones set and safe to be touched?

Safety is one of your top priorities.

You’ve just invested 9 months in growing your bundle of joy and now you have a little human to protect, nurture and raise.

In other words, you have a lot on your plate!

Let’s break it down into some easy steps.

1. Safety is our primary concern as well.

Our first visit with your little one consists of a thorough history of the birth followed by a detailed examination.

What are we looking for?

During the history, we talk in detail about mom’s health, pregnancy, labor and birth.

During the examination, we assess mobility, structure of their spine, tone of the muscles and determine if there is any evidence of tension in their delicate nerve system.

Their nervous system is what coordinates growth, development, immunity, and healing. It controls everything as it’s the master control system of the body.

2. Chiropractic care for children is extremely effective.

Effective for what?

For nervous system tension, often caused by spinal misalignment.

When little ones are born, they typically make their way into the world, forcefully, through the birthing canal.

In fact, an estimated 60-90 lbs of force is applied to your baby’s neck during a “normal” delivery.

Never mind the help of forceps, vacuum or c-section (these little ones often experience additional force during delivery).

There’s no need to get scared if your child was born with an assisted delivery, interventions are sometimes necessary and can help to save a baby or mom’s life.

The expertise of a chiropractor is to check the baby’s spine for misalignment, determine if nerve system pressure is present and if so, what affect it may be having on the overall growth and development of your little one.

3. Your baby’s bones won’t crack.

In fact, your baby doesn’t even have a lot of bone yet. Most of their bones are still soft cartilage and don’t fully turn to bone until their teenage years!

The techniques we use on babies are VERY different from adults.

In fact, most babies only need a touch light enough to gently press in the skin of a ripe tomato.

We also explain and demonstrate exactly what we are going to do as we take you through the process.

4. Your baby’s bones are mostly cartilage at this point, so the bones have not fully formed.

Right now, your baby has a C-shape to their spine.

As they begin to crawl, walk and explore the world, their spine will begin to develop natural curves, much like the ones you or I have in our spines.

If your child’s spine develops with misalignment from birth, as their bones become bone and “set into place”, they may have compromised spinal structure which is much more difficult to correct in adolescence and adulthood.

It’s best to look for early signs of nerve system tension and spinal misalignment to help prevent secondary issues as they grow and develop.

A Pediatric Structural Chiropractor can help you with this.

The last thing to remember is that a chiropractic check-up for your little one is NOT a treatment.

A check-up is just that, an evaluation to see if we can help.
